I am currently working on a series of 6 8x10 in. paintings. I wanted to switch up my palette, which typically consists of umbers, ochres, and grays. I was inspired by my friend Thom’s concert photos from various shows like: Radiohead, Sonic Youth, Wilco, and the Mountain Goats/Kaki King. With the dramatic stage lighting, I felt that the photos would be an excellent point of departure to test out a new palette. I’m also studying works by Fauve and German Expressionist artists for palette ideas. I’ve only painted a few portraits, so I am somewhat intimidated by the subject matter. I just finished up the two Sonic Youth paintings on Monday. I just started the Kaki King painting Thursday night.

I'm very excited to see the rest of the series--I don't have much of an art vocabulary, but the second one is really striking, especially the hair. I'm really looking forward to the Mountain Goats ones!
My favorite is the top on with the girl.
I think its sorta similar to Edvard Munch...like his earlier works. just a touch though
There's a lot more brightness to yours and its an understated brightness.
She looks really peaceful, but the brightness surrounding her and even the light on her collar bone reminds me of the concert going on around her and I'm a big fan of juxtaposing a calmness and chaos.
This is Mandy. Blogger still has me as "Team Three" from Grad Project, haha. Anyway,
Wow, Jenn! You're really talented!
The first thing that comes to mind when I see all of them is that the vibrant, intense colors like yellows, blues, etc, remind me of the sky in New Mexico. Just as each painting's hue seems to alter a bit from the painting before it, they seem like portraits with the same mystical quality of sunsets. (One day you'll have to come out here for inspiration).
